The Two Words That Can Change Your Productivity

DANIJELA ROLIH

There's a simple mindset shift that can quietly change how you experience your day.

"I have to go to the gym."
"I get to go to the gym."

"I have to see my friends."
"I get to see my friends."

The task hasn't changed. But your internal response has.

Language doesn’t just describe reality — it shapes how we experience it.

When you say “I have to,” your brain reads the task as an obligation. It can create subtle resistance — a sense of pressure, even mild stress. The wording carries an undertone of constraint, as if something is being imposed on you.

But when you shift to “I get to,” something changes.

The task doesn’t disappear.... but it starts to feel chosen, not forced.
Less like a burden, and more like an opportunity.

It’s a small shift in language, but it can completely change how the moment feels.

Psychologically, this connects to the idea of autonomy. Research in motivation theory shows that we're more energised when we feel our actions are self-directed rather than externally forced. The difference between "have to" and "get to" may seem small, but it moves you from a place of obligation to one of agency.

And agency matters.

This shift can be particularly helpful when you're:

  • Starting a new habit
  • Working toward a long-term goal
  • Feeling tired but still committed
  • Resentful about something you once chose

It reconnects you to the original reason you said yes.

Of course, this isn't a cure-all. There are real hardships and responsibilities that don't disappear through reframing. In moments of genuine distress, forcing positivity can feel invalidating.

But for everyday resistance — the gym session, the study block, the work task, the social plan — this small language shift can soften the emotional load.

You're not changing the task.

You're changing your relationship to it.

And sometimes productivity isn't about pushing harder.
It's about narrating differently.
